In connection with top hunting in Sweden, we were to test how a hand-held thermal spotter works on this type of hunting. In that regard, we had to find out if it is even legal?

Use of thermal spotter in Sweden

Gjennom vår samarbeidsavtale med Ardens inovation og Pixfra Technology har vi fått den håndholdte termiske spotteren «Ranger 650».

We were going to take this to Sweden and test whether it is effective at spotting forest birds. Therefore, we first had to find out whether this is legal to use on the other side of the border.

Can be used

On the website of https://www.naturvardsverket.se/4ace7f/globalassets/nfs/2023/nfs-2023-8.pdf we found the following:

Section 7 When hunting with a gun, other weapon accessories than laser sights, night sights, thermal sights and lamps may be used, unless otherwise stated in §§ 14 or 14 a §§ jaktförordningen (1987:905) or other provisions in these regulations.

Section 19 When hunting deer, despite the restriction in accordance with section 7, shotguns with lights, night sights and thermal sights may be used, if hunting is permitted throughout the day. In such hunting, the thermal sight may only be used in open terrain, at hunting sites or other known shooting sites.

Exemption from hunting in contiguous buildings

In other words, we found nothing that says anything about hand-held thermal units.

Så søkte vi på videre og fant en artikkel skrevet i «Jaktogjegere»(https://www.jaktojagare.se/utrustning/termisk-teknik-i-dagsljus/) with a clear answer to our question.

No, there is nothing in the ordinance that prohibits you from using thermal technology to scout game, regardless of the time of day. It is not permitted to use night sights or image intensifiers as aiming devices, but thermal technology in a standard hand-held binocular is not mentioned in the rule text.

Does that mean I can scout and find game with a handheld device, then put it down, pick up the rifle and aim and shoot game with conventional daylight-adjusted sights?

 Yes, says Per Risberg.

We try

We conclude with the same as hunting handler Per Risberg in the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency that thermal hand-held devices are legal for hunting in Sweden and take our pixfra spotter with us on top hunts.

Hei, funket det med termisk? 😀Spent å høre. Det krever sikkert litt innsats som alt annet.
